Research experience

Postodoctoral studies: Department of Biomaterials, School of Dentistry, University of Athens


Familiarity with advanced analytical instrumentation including spectroscopy (micro MIR FTIR, Raman, Auger Electron, and X-ray photoelectron); SEM/EDS; chromatography (GC-MS, HPLC)


Two sabbaticals (6 and 3 months) spent at the Laboratory for Cell Proliferation and Ageing, Institute of Biology, National Center for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’


Training included cytotoxicity and estrogenicity assays (MTT, DNA synthesis) as well as isolation of PDL fibroblasts and culture under appropriate conditions; application of mechanical stretching at different intensities, frequencies and durations; collection of cell extracts and study of the expression and activation of signalling molecules with Western analysis.

 

Organizational/administrative experience

 

Academic

 

 Manages a budget of the Department in excess of 2.5 million CHF and 40 faculty and auxiliary staff (9 postgraduates-3 per year); planned for and managed a research infrastructure fund of 0,5 million CHF

ntroduced and directs the core course to the postgraduate dental curricula

 

Planned for and implemented a PhD track for dental graduates

 

Initiated and led the process of hiring a ‘inhouse statistician’ to support the research activities of postgraduate students and faculty

 

Proposed an undergraduate research experience program, which aims at developing research skills and overview of research methods and practice to dental undergraduate dental students

 

Reformed the program didactic curriculum adding more than 6 hours of weekly seminars; introduced and directs the core course curricula for all postgraduate students; established a postgraduate continuing education seminar series with invited lecturers

 

Initiated research training including research methodology and academic integrity and misconduct seminars

 

 Promoted research activities among staff and students: the output of the Clinic increased 300% in 4 years in terms of published articles and 450% in presentations at the European Orthodontic Society conference

Established the orthodontic biomaterials lab equipped with surface imaging, analysis, and mechanical testing apparatuses

 

Modernized the clinical facilities of the postgraduate Orthodontic clinic, introducing digital amenities in each cubicle

Modified the clinical training introducing course on evidence-based practice

 

Led the successful accreditation process of the Department conducted by the Swiss Dental Association

 

Initiated the on-line application process for postgraduate program prospective students-established a webportal and software

 

Led the successful accreditation of the postgraduate program by the NEBEOP (Network of Erasmus-based European Orthodontic Programs)

 

Introduced the concept of ‘portfolio’ of each postgraduate student comprising of academic, didactic, clinical, research and continuing education activities, output and performance

 

Led the voluntary accreditation (informal) of the program by examiners of the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association
